Checkmate: The painting was eerie and disturbing-the kind not easily erased from one’s memory. It hung on a wall inside a farmhouse somewhere outside Richmond, VA. Dinner had just been served when the chess master noticed. This particular piece of art depicted a chess match well underway. On one side of the board sat a man whose slumped shoulders and panicked eyes showed utter defeat. The look on his face left the viewer with the impression that the stakes surrounding this duel had been high-his very soul had been waged on the outcome.
On the other side of the board was an awful and terrifying image of Mephistopheles-the legend of Faust who represents the spirit of the devil, the soul stealer. Mephistopheles’s large figure was rising from his chair in obvious victory, gloating over the spoils he was ready to seize from this pitiful opponent. He was ready to shout, “Checkmate!” Only a close study of the board and a true knowledge of the game would reveal the king had one more move; but this king didn’t know it.
How true it is in our lives as well. Satan will try to declare checkmate time and time again, seeking to convince us that he has won and that there is no way out. But God, our King, has a destiny for each of our lives, and He is NOT a quitter!
